Helping victims of domestic abuse escape with their pets

Many Paws Volunteer Transport offers safe haven domestic violence transportation services.

Domestic violence and abuse occur when one individual in a close relationship attempts to exert control over the other. 
It can manifest in various forms, including physical, emotional, verbal, sexual, or financial abuse. 
This phenomenon affects individuals regardless of their age, race, sex, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.
It is likely that you are acquainted with an individual who has been directly impacted by domestic violence abuse.
  • On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men.
  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner contact sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking with impacts such as injury, fearfulness, post-traumatic stress disorder, use of victim services, contraction of sexually transmitted diseases, etc.
  • 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. This includes a range of behaviors (e.g. slapping, shoving, pushing) and in some cases might not be considered “domestic violence.”
  • 1 in 7 women and 1 in 25 men have been injured by an intimate partner.
  • 1 in 10 women have been raped by an intimate partner. Data is unavailable on male victims.
  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence (e.g. beating, burning, strangling) by an intimate partner in their lifetime
  • 1 in 7 women and 1 in 18 men have been stalked by an intimate partner during their lifetime to the point in which they felt very fearful or believed that they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed.
  • On a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide.
  • 19% of domestic violence involves a weapon.
  • The presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation increases the risk of homicide by 500%.
  • Intimate partner violence accounts for 15% of all violent crime.
  • Women between the ages of 18-24 are most commonly abused by an intimate partner.
  • Domestic victimization is correlated with a higher rate of depression and suicidal behavior.
  • Only 34% of people who are injured by intimate partners receive medical care for their injuries.

The Unique Challenges of Leaving a Domestic Violence Situation with a Pet

Pets can be super important for people who have gone through domestic violence. But having a pet can make it tough to find a safe place to live. A 2021 research review indicated that a substantial percentage (ranging from 18% to 56%) of domestic abuse victims delay leaving their situation due to concerns about the well-being of their pets.

It’s possible that you might not realize you need help until it’s too late. But when you’re ready to take that step, know that there are safe places waiting for you. There are many ways to reach out for assistance, so please don’t hesitate to do so.


How Can the Many Paws Team Assist You?

  • Please have your domestic violence advocate contact us to get this process started. You can reach out to us through our Facebook page, or email us at manypawsvolunteers@gmail.com.
  • Many Paws will seek sponsorships to provide a bus ticket for the victim. While bus transportation usually is not an option for the pet to travel with you, Many Paws will get the pet to safety and into a home with one of our fosters.
  • Many Paws will assess the most suitable transport method for the four-legged furry companion to join you.
  • While transport is being planned for the pet to you, we will work on getting the pet up to date on vaccines, altered, and equipped with gear to travel safely to your destination.
